Symptoms of a food allergy can range from mild itching or hives to severe reactions such as bloating, swelling, difficulty breathing, and anaphylaxis.
How should I prepare for a Food Allergy Test?
Before a food allergy test, it’s typically recommended to avoid antihistamines and certain medications that might interfere with the results. You should also refrain from smoking or drinking coffee an hour before your test.
Why is a blood test a better way to test for food allergies than a skin prick test?
Blood tests for food allergies, such as the IgE antibody test, can provide a broader range of results and are less affected by medications or skin conditions compared to skin prick tests. Blood tests are also suitable for individuals with skin conditions that may interfere with skin prick testing.

How are you tested for food allergies?
Food allergy testing typically begins with a consultation with a specialist, such as an allergist or immunologist. The process includes a detailed medical history and a physical examination to understand your symptoms and possible triggers. Common diagnostic methods include: • Skin Prick Test (SPT): A small amount of suspected allergen is placed on your skin, usually on the forearm or back, and then gently pricked. If a raised bump or redness develops, it may indicate an allergy. • Blood Test (IgE test): This measures the level of specific IgE antibodies your immune system produces in response to particular foods. • Elimination Diet: Under medical supervision, certain foods are removed from your diet and then gradually reintroduced to identify the culprit. • Oral Food Challenge (OFC): Considered the most accurate test, this involves consuming small amounts of the suspected allergen under strict medical supervision to monitor for any reaction.
